Children with diabetes is a growing epidemic in the United States. There are some parents who have expressed concern for their children with diabetes and wonder what normal sugar levels are. No worries, we have your answers here.
What is normal?
For healthy children, blood sugar levels should be under 100 milligrams per deciliter (mg/dl) after fasting eight to 10 hours, according to Livestrong.com. If your child’s blood sugar levels are between 100 and 126 mg/dl then your child has pre-diabetes. If your child has a blood sugar level over 126 mg/dl or more, then your child has diabetes.
How to prevent blood sugar problems –
According to Health Key, three main tips will help prevent blood sugar problems in your children:
- Test your child’s blood sugar often. Some symptoms of high blood sugar are fatigue and increased thirst and urination and may not occur in your child. Their blood sugar should be tested often especially if their routine is not regular.
- Encourage your child to drink lots of water or noncaffeinated, sugar-free drinks. These drinks will help prevent your child from becoming dehydrated.
- If your child’s blood sugar level is frequently staying above 126 mg/dl, notify your doctor. The dosage of insulin or medicine may need to be changed or adjusted.
If you still have questions or concerns about your child having diabetes or their blood sugar level is questionable we suggest you make an appointment to visit your doctor or pediatrician. The quicker the situation can be taken care of, the easier diabetes could be to treat.
